Inleiding:
The Ciare 12.00SW has proven its competence. This is the driver that powers the Punisher Horn. It features a thick stabile cone and a strong magnet. The long 4" diameter coil gives this driver a massive powerhandling.
The Punisher is one hell of a sub but not very suited for home use. I tried it but didn't go low enough to hit those real low notes from movies with great impact. Therefore I came up with a new experimental design using the Ciare 12.00SW. This is a rearloaded conical horn but with a twist. The rear of the driver is positioned in the mouth of the horn. In fact this configuration resembles what Tom Danley calls a 'Tapped Horn' but in fact Jensen did a similar design way back called the 'Transflex'.
Constructie:
The construction is very easy. There are only 90 degrees angles. The horn profile is 'stepped'. For low frequencies this has virtually no disadvantage compared to a real conical horn. The wavelengths are so large that they simply ignore these steps. This new design is aimed at the 30-80Hz range. It has a sensitivity of about 94-95dB down to 30Hz. The physical damage a 30Hz note does to your room is so large that you do not need massive power to drive the Stepped Horn. But if you drive this cabinet with 1000-1500W it really starts to move the air! You will experience low notes in music you did not know they where actually there.
I don't claim this is the best sub ever but it is fun! If you already have some Ciare 12.00SW on hand then build this Stepped Horn. Then you can experience the Ciare 12.00SW power at home.
Best regards,
Walt
